Met Office issues yellow weather warning for heavy snow on the A9 and in the Cairngorms
Heavy snow could cause disruption in parts of the Highlands overnight tonight, the Met Office has warned.
It has issued a yellow weather warning which comes into force at 3am and remain in place until 9am.
Up to 10cm of snow is possible in some locations, although any accumulating snow is expected to be in places more than 200 metres above sea level.
The warning area covers the Cairngorms and much of the A9 between Inverness and Perth. It also extends eastward into the Grampians and Spittal of Glenshee and southward into the Stirling area, where a separate yellow warning for rain is in place for the central belt.
The snow warning area extends north almost as far as Daviot.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Snow is expected to develop, particularly over higher ground, during the early hours of Friday before easing during the morning. Accumulating snow is expected to mainly occur above around 200 metres, with a chance of temporary accumulations below this where precipitation becomes temporarily heavy.
“Two to five centimetres of snow is expected fairly widely above 250 metres with a chance that a few places within the warning area at lower levels could see a few cm settle. Accumulations of 10 centimetres or more are expected to be reserved for above 300 metres.”
