Last week, we shared the story of how the Ullapool CalMac staff went “above and beyond” so that a family could “make it to the wake in time to say goodbye” at relative’s funeral. Dr Victoria Gray shared how she travelled 500 miles from north Wales to the Outer Hebrides, with the invaluable help from CalMac staff finding space for them on the ferry at late notice, and making sure they made it to the wake in the nick of time.

Mary Ann Macleod, from the Isle of Lewis, wrote in to the Ross-shire Journal to share her thoughts on the story. She said: “I totally agree with the lady in the article praising the Ullapool CalMac staff, as I've heard many similar stories.

“It was kind of the lady to bring this story to the attention of the public, as the CalMac front line staff all too often experience terrible abuse from members of public if anything at all goes wrong, and even get blamed for the weather!”

Another good news story from last week was a Muir of Ord care home holding their first baby group. The first Urray House Care Home parent and toddler event brough “energy and laughter” into the air, with the care home residents “absolutely delighted to interact with the young visitors”.

Our readers took to the Ross-shire Journal Facebook page to share their thoughts on the article.

Sarah Fran Dayda commented: “This really is an amazing thing - the smile on the residents’ faces says it all, they all look so happy!”

Barbara McArthur said: “I love this! My mother used to take me to Urray House as a very young child. I can remember being there and loving running up and down the really long corridor with a mustard carpet. That was the old Urray House… many moons ago!”

Lesley Fraser added: “What a great idea, well done you cleaver people. I bet that’s brought a smile to everybody’s face!”
