A Wester Ross crofting couple has given Highland Council planning department prior notice that they want to erect a polytunnel on their land to grow vegetables “for economic benefit.”

If the farm related non residential building is approved, Roderick and Anna MacKenzie of Corran, Arnisdale by Kyle, have opted to order an 8m by 4m “storm strength” Polycrub produced by a social enterprise company in Shetland that utilises redundant plastic pipes from the aquaculture industry.

The names Polycrub comes from the clear polycarbonate sheeting that clads the roof, and the Shetland word “crub” meaning a sheltered growing area. Lower sections, door and window facings will be clad in timber.

Their project is under consideration, and if successful, the MacKenzies hope to sell their vegetables locally.
