GREEN-FINGERED gurus have an opportunity to reap some silverware this weekend when an Easter Ross horticultural society stages its autumn show.

The spotlight falls on flowers, vegetables, pot plants, fruit and baking at the Alness Horticultural Society Autumn Show.

It takes place in the Ardross Alness Bowling Club with entries to be staged by 10.30am and doors open to the public at 1pm. Prizegiving at 3pm will be followed by an auction and a raffle.

And handing out the prizes will be a local gardening enthusiast whose name will also be familiar to anyone who follows strongman competitions.

Ben Stoltman, father of world’s strongest brothers, Tom and Luke, will do the honours. He features prominently in the latest episode of the YouTube series, The World’s Strongest Family, in which he is accompanied by son Tom in a guided tour of his pride and joy garden.

The group is a small local club that runs a number of horticultural based events in and around Alness and encourages people to grow their own produce.

The group said: “Just bring along any of your veg, cut flowers, pot plants, baking, preserves or floral art as per the schedule for a chance to win something.

“There is also a children’s section and a junior section as well.

“A reminder to all you flower arrangers out there - we have a floral art section just for you.

“We have tried to choose classes which don’t require you to buy lots and lots of flowers, making do with what you have in your garden, at the road side and in our scrub land.

“When we say ‘wild material’ think ‘weeds’, plants that someone would be delighted that you cut down.”
