A BLACK Isle powerlifter in his 70s has smashed a bench press world record in the British championships.

Ash Sinclair (71) of Bogburn farmhouse in Balnabeen, set the record at the event in King’s Lynn.

He was competing in the up to 82.5kg class and the existing record stood at 118kg.

Mr Sinclair broke the record four times on successive lifts, eventually hoisting 135kg on his final lift.

He got things rolling with an opening lift of 125kg.

He said: “My second lift I put in at 130kg which was successful and I was happy with that one. My third lift, which counted for the competition, was 132.5. By breaking the world record you are allowed a fourth lift with all the international referees there, only for record-breaking purposes, so I took the option of a fourth lift which is where I got the 135kg – I had already won the competition.”

Mr Sinclair said he had played sport all of his life and added: “I’ve been back to competitively powerlifting for the past few years – having done it in my 30s but I came back again after a period. I’ve been back on the national and world circuit for about 15 years.”

A member of the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association who firmly believes in that ethos, he also passed a drugs test after his record-breaking lift, ending a great day to remember.
