Ardross Community Council fears a new wind farm

PLANS for a wind testing mast in Strathrusdale near Alness will go before Highland Councillors this week, prompting concerns that yet another wind farm is on the horizon.

Wind Energy (Glenmorie) Ltd has applied for planning permission to install the 80 metre high mast on open moorland below the sumit of Mheall Bhenneit, for a period of three years.

The energy company wants to measure the wind speed at the site so it can decide whether to consider submitting a planning application for a new wind farm.

However, Ardross Community Council has objected to the application and pointed out that it will be the third application for a met mast in a very localised area of Strathrusdale.

The community council objected: "The proliferation of masts is not welcomed. The community council, residents and local landowners have always taken the view that they do not want any intervisibility of windfarms or turbines on this ridge where the met mast is proposed."

Scottish Natural Heritage has no objections. The Ministry of Defence, which uses the area for pilot training, has not objected either although it says that in the interests of safety the mast should be fitted with aviation lighting.

The application has been recommended for approval by Allan Todd, the council’s area planning manager.
