Dingwall dogged by poo problem

Jack Shepherd, a community councillor in Dingwall who raised the issue via his own Facebook page, said dog dirt left hanging from bushes and trees in bags along the canal path were a source of constant irritation.

He said: “They are hanging off fences, trees and probably there are dozens which make it to the water. A woman told me that she had lifted 27 bags from the area south of Jubilee Park that people had thrown into the undergrowth rather than carry the bag to the nearest bin, which was probably no more than 300 metres away. We lifted another 10 or so before we headed for the cars. I’ve seen them on the canal bank, within metres of the sign telling all to bag it and take it home.

“There are volunteers and general good souls who care about the town going out and tidying up after the lazy people that keep doing this. The hard part is bending down to pick it up – why then hang it on a fence? This is just as disgusting as leaving it where your dog left it.”

His post attracted plenty of support on Facebook. One suggested a dog walkers’ group on a Facebook page: “It’s amazing how many people will start seeing things and reporting stuff on there,” they said.

A Highland Council spokeswoman said: “We ask people to contact the council with any relevant information either by phone on 01349 886603 or using the online forms www.highland.gov.uk
