THE Dingwall Field Club June outing was to Moy Island on the River Conon, a gentle stroll among small trees and shrubs, alive with bird song and early summer flowers. This was extended to a walk further downstream towards Brahan.

The Saturday outing was to a different river – the Nairn – at the Farr Community Wood, walking the outer Milton Loop. This went through tall, mature conifers – mainly Scots pine, European larch and douglas fir – before a steep descent to the river among hazels, alders and birches and habitats for many different plants and animals.

The Nairn, though quite narrow here is varied in its course – sometimes slow with pools and sandy banks, many areas with interesting large rounded rocks and some places narrow with small rushing rapids – Dipper country.

At the wood the well-loved dainty chickweed wintergreen was seen. Blaeberry bushes were all through the wood but unfortunately too early for the berries! The usual tormentil, stitchwort, wood sorrel and bird’s foot trefoil were in abundance with tall stately foxgloves.

This woodis home to squirrels – one was seen – and others who perhaps prefer the quiet of night – badgers and foxes. Royal blue damsel flies were seen down near the river, many butterflies and insects enjoying feeding off the flowers.

An evening walk is planned at Knockbain in Dingwall.
