SILVER trophies fought over by soldiers at Fort George for the last 100 years will be on display to the public for the first time next week.

The magnificent trophies, which include 12 cups donated to the 4th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders and sister regiments, have been lent to the Dingwall Museum for a year by trustees of the Highlanders’ Museum at Fort George.

The exhibition, which also includes medallions commemorating 280 years of service by Regimental Association committee members, will be on display on Monday (August 15) until the museum closes its doors for the winter in October.

Museum trustee, Ian MacLeod told the Ross-shire Journal, “These trophies have never been seen by the public before."

The most striking trophy in the collection is The Sergeant Shooting Trophy – The Wooden Spoon, which is about three foot in length and made of mahogany.

Also on display is a miniature model of the Cambrai Cross, which stands in Station Square in the town. The model, made by Mr MacLeod, was used for a recent Church of Scotland exhibition. The cross is dedicated to the Seaforth Highlanders who fell during the Battle of Cambrai in France in 1917.

Mr MacLeod added, “We are indebted to the trustees at Fort George for allowing us to display the trophies. Hopefully, the exhibition will be of interest to the public and family members of Seaforths.”

Mr MacLeod said he would also like to thank members of the public for their “generosity” during a recent collection for the Ross-shire Regimental Association at Tesco supermarket in Dingwall. The proceeds will go towards grants for widows and family members of veterans.”

More on this story in next week's Ross-shire Journal.
