Easter Ross first responder group going from strength to strength in support role

A COMMUNITY group set up to support the ambulance service in Easter Ross has expanded its role.

Alness and Evanton First Responders, also known as Emergency Community Rescue, is keen to broaden the grass roots support role it plays.

Group coordinator Michael O'Neill said its "bread and butter" is responding to 999 calls on behalf of the ambulance service "and that will always be at the heart of what we do".

But he said the group wanted to be able to offer more to the community so now offers emergency medical transport, free first aid training for anyone who needs it and a search capability for missing people.

He said the group had already helped local hospitals get equipment to patients and recently put a smile on the faces of children in Raigmore Hospital by turning up with Mickey Mouse in tow.

The group hailed June Ross of Morrisons for her support.

He said the local community has been very supportive and that the group wanted in particular to recognise "one person who has gone above and beyond helping us". It has awarded June Ross from the local Morrisons store its own community hero accolade.

Mr O'Neill also hailed group member David Ridgeway for the work he has put into the group since the start. He has been named the group's volunteer of the year.

He added: "We are proud to be the group that serves the people of Ross-shire." He said it was highly rewarding.

The group runs its own Facebook page.
