FIREFIGHTERS from Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue service have been battling heath fires in Ross-shire since the weekend.

Helicopters were brought in on Saturday to pour water on a fire threatening nearby properties in Torridon.

They were also fighting outbreaks at Glenshiel, Dundonnell, and Ardmair north of Ullapool, as well as at Inverpolly in Assynt.

This morning (Monday) a spokeswoman for the service said there had been a further outbreak of a heath fire at Glenshiel which firefighters were now battling in addition to the continuing outbreaks at Torridon and Dundonnell. The blaze at Ardmair has been extinguished.

It is understood the blaze also resulted in hillwalkers being airlifted to safety from Liathach, Torridon.
