AN award-winning Wester Ross museum is celebrating the launch of the 2025 season by waiving admission for one day.

The grand opening of Gairloch Museum takes place on Saturday (March 1).

With artwork on display by Carol Cocks (Kishorn) and Blake Milteer (Edinburgh), visitors are promised lots to see alongside the museum’s fascinating main collection.

It will be open from 11am – 4pm and though at this time of year the café is usually closed, it will be open on a volunteer-led, pay-what-you-can donation basis for home made soup, cakes, coffees and teas.

At midday, artists Carol Cocks and Blake Milteer will give a brief introduction to their artwork, so there is also the opportunity to “meet the artist” and gain a deeper understanding of their inspiration and efforts in creating their artwork.

“We are really looking forward to getting the 2025 season underway,” said Eilidh Smith, front of house supervisor.

“Our first exhibitions are cause enough for celebration, but we also feel particularly lucky to have such a fantastic group of volunteers who are all prepared to pitch in and help – not just on the day but throughout the year to help run the museum.”

The museum is also particularly proud to be termed as a “must see” visitor attraction in Bradt’s North Highland Slow Travel guidebook.

Eilidh added: “We think we’re known locally as a great destination, but it is wonderful to have had this recognition from further afield – and we hope the word spreads through the North of Scotland and beyond that we have something very special for all visitors to experience here.”

Gairloch Museum is open on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am – 4pm during March.

From March 29, they are open six days a week, Mondays – Saturdays, 10am – 5pm.

In 2019, the museum moved to a new building thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (Scotland), Museums Galleries Scotland and other funders. In October 2020 Gairloch Museum was announced winner of Art Fund Museum of theYear 2020.
