Inverness Victorian Market joke shop legend Nancy Rattray’s funeral date announced

A much-loved Victorian Market trader will be laid to rest in Inverness on December 23.

Nancy Rattray’s death a week ago prompted an unprecedented outpouring of grief and tributes from thousands of locals who fondly remembered visiting her popular joke and fancy dress shop.

The store, which closed for the last time in August 2020, had been in the family since 1953 and was run by Nancy from 1966.

Many recollections and stories conveying Nancy’s friendliness, sense of fun and great knack of locating obscure and unusual items from within the depths of her stock were told on social media over the past week.

Funeral directors D. Chisholm & Sons have now issued details of Nancy's funeral.

Their notice reads:

RATTRAY

Inverness

Peacefully in Raigmore Hospital on Thursday 11th December 2024, Nancy Ray Morrison (nee Rattray), aged 83 years, Tern Avenue, Inverness (retired proprietor, Joke Shop, Market Hall), a dear sister, aunt, cousin and friend to many. Funeral Ceremony on Monday 23rd December 2024 at 12.30pm in D. Chisholm & Sons’ Funeral Home, Huntly Street, Inverness; thereafter to Kilvean Cemetery. All welcome to attend. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Nancy towards Macmillan Cancer Support may be given at the door or on D. Chisholm & Sons' website where livestream will be available.
