Mum was over drink-drive limit in Ross-shire after plane cancelled





A MUM whose flight was cancelled was caught in Ross-shire driving back home after having drinks at the airport.

Emma Howes (37) was caught by police officers over three times the legal drink-drive limit on the A890 at Strome Ferry, Wester Ross.

Fiscal depute Martina Eastwood told Sheriff Gary Aitken at Inverness Sheriff Court: “At around 12.45am on July 20, 2024, police attended a single traffic road incident.

“When they attended there was a smell of alcohol from the accused and there was child in the rear side passenger seat.”

Howes, of Portree, pled guilty to driving over the limit.

Sheriff Aitken fined her a total of £640, endorsed her driving license and disqualified her from driving for 12 months.

Howes’ defence solicitor said: “She was due to fly from Inverness to Luton with her son. She drank alcohol and was not intending to drive.

“She arrived at 6pm and the flight was cancelled and was in a panic to get home. Ms Howes made the mistake to drive.

“She had been in an abusive relationship at the time, which she has now fled.

“She accepts her actions.”
