Ferry passengers hoping to travel on Hogmanay were facing major disruption after cancellations on several routes.

CalMac has warned that multiple sailings on its Ullapool-Stornoway route are cancelled on Hogmanay due to the severe weather, while in Caithness, Pentland Ferries and Northlink were advising of some disruption on their Pentland Firth services.

CalMac said its 7am and 2pm sailings from Stornoway to Ullapool, and the 10.30am Ullapool to Stornoway crossing are all cancelled on Hogmanay.

And the 5.30pm Ullapool to Stornoway departure will now sail at the earlier time of 3pm due to the weather.

CalMac added: “Citylink have confirmed that they will be unable to provide a service to meet with the earlier departure time of 3pm.

“Any customers travelling to Ullapool by bus will need to get the Citylink morning service bus at 8.10am, which has limited availability.”

Pentland Ferries, meanwhile, has warned that its 7.45am sailing from St Margaret’s Hope, and the 9.30am departure from Gills Bay are both cancelled.

It added: “Updates will be provided throughout the day. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Northlink Ferries was reporting no cancellations at the time of writing, but did advise that some sailing times had been delayed, with the 6.30am Stromness to Scrabster sailing departing at 8am, and the 8.45am Scrabster to Stromness crossing scheduled for the later time of 10.15am.

Afternoon sailings were expected to operate “as per schedule”.
