PUPILS at a Ross-shire secondary battled it out in the final of a chess competition which organisers hope will now go from strength to strength.

Dingwall Academy said the final round of the internal Harbinger Chess Tournament 2022 was contested this week by Liam Mitchell (S1) and Andrew Thornton (S4).

It was described as"a balanced game with opportunities to prevail on both sides alternately".

After Liam Mitchell after blundering a Bishop, managed to bounce back pressuring his rival resulting in a Rook - Queen checkmate, awarding him the trophy of the tournament. Congratulations to Liam and Andrew for reaching the final round and to all contestants for taking part. The tournament will be held again next year, with hopefully more and more contestants each year.
