Invergordon answers primary school call

AN Invergordon primary school has been given a brand new "nurture room" thanks to a housing association and five local businesses.

The businesses responded to a call from Invergordon-based Albyn Housing Society for help to create a facility for local children in need of extra support South Lodge Primary School.

The businesses donated materials, labour, equipment and services to create the nurture room which has been set up to look at feel like a home with kitchen and living room spaces.

Albyn Housing Society, which has around 600 homes for rent in Invergordon and supports a number of local community projects, offered to source equipment for the nurture room through its Community Fund and network of trade contacts.

Thanks to the hard work and support of construction group, Robertson, Korrie Plumbing and Mechanical Ltd, JTC Furnishing Group, Sharon Leon Carpets and painter and decorator Billy Kelman, the nurture room is now complete and ready to welcome its first group of youngsters.

Calum Macaulay, chief executive at Albyn Housing Society, said: "Our main purpose is to support communities to thrive and become stronger, so we set up the Community Fund to provide small grants to local clubs, projects and facilities which contribute towards achieving this aim.

"Albyn Housing Society first started in Invergordon 40 years ago this autumn, so we are delighted to support this local cause. The nurture room is a truly innovative project which will see school staff work with young people to build up their confidence and life skills in a comforting and homely environment.

"We wish it every success. We would also like to extend our gratitude to those who gave up time, staff, materials and equipment to contribute to the project."

Tania Mackie, cluster head teacher at South Lodge and Park Primary Schools, said: "We are very grateful to Albyn Housing for all their support, without them this project would not be possible. ‘The Nook’ will support young people across our community and link with lifelong learning in the Curriculum for Excellence. We would also like to extend our thanks to support for learning teacher Heather Drake Brockman who is leading this innovative project".
