The first some horrified people knew of the disgusting spray paint desecration was when they went to pay their respects to loved ones.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police received a report of vandalism to graves at the Rosskeen Cemetery in the Invergordon area, which is believed to have happened between Tuesday, 9 July, and Friday, Friday, 12 July.
“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident 1741 of July 12."
The grim attack has also prompted a number of big-hearted offers of help to clean the gravestones as well as condemnation for whoever was responsible and sympathy to those affected.
One posted: “That is absolutely awful to see, I’m truly sorry that this has happened to your loved one’s resting place.”
Another summed up the feelings of many when she wrote: “That is terrible and so upsetting.
“I’m so sorry this happened to you and your family. I’m disgusted at the complete disregard and disrespect. It’s hard to believe even the stupidest of thugs would think to do this. I just don’t get it.”
And another stated: “Scrolling through the photos praying I don’t see any of my family members, knowing fine everyone will be doing the same and some having to experience the feeling of it being theirs is utterly devastating.
“My heart is broken for the family members and friends that have had this happen to their precious loved ones. If anyone needs help cleaning these up I would be more than happy to help (not that we should help the ones that have to) but we absolutely do not want them left like that!”
