Tain and District Youth Café YMCA stalwart Peter Berry awarded highest accolade for work over two decades
A YOUTH worker, who has fulfilled multiple roles helping young people in Easter Ross, has been given the highest possible accolade for his efforts.
Peter Berry, of Tain and District Youth Café YMCA, has been awarded the Sir George Williams Medal – the highest accolade the charity can confer.
It recognises more than 20 years of service and dedication to face-to-face work with young people. Graham Nutt, senior youth and community worker, said Mr Berry has been a keen supporter of the Tain group since its inception, now acting as its chairman.
The hands-on helper has also served as a first aider, health and safety risk assessor and volunteer for drop-in sessions. As a fundraiser he has overseen the Tain Gala Tea Tent for many years, raising more than £1000 each year for the youth café.
More recently he helped run the stalls alongside the youth committee at local food festivals.
He has also, with Chris Bousfield, walked part of the Great Wall of China to raise funds for Tain YMCA.
Mr Nutt said: “Peter has directly impacted many young people’s lives through his dedication and passion to them and has seen first hand how the YMCA can change lives through the work the YMCA undertakes.”
He also met with staff every two weeks, checking in on how they were during the Covid pandemic. He also received the Scottish YMCA Volunteer of the Year Award a few years ago.
