Why this Highland man is running NC500 for Mikeysline
A Highland man is set to run the NC500 for mental health and suicide prevention charity Mikeysline.
Cam Wilson (26) will set off from the Highland capital on April 28 running 61 miles on his first day to Lochcarron.
He is taking on the challenge to raise funds for Mikeysline, a charity close to his heart.
The challenge is expected to take around 10 days and Cam will be running the equivalent of around two marathons per day.
Cam said: “I feel this undertaking of the gruelling parts of the NC500 reflects the struggles people face with mental health.
“With mental health being such a huge issue here in the Highlands, with higher rates of depression and suicide than other places in Scotland, it shows how important charities like Mikeysline are.
“During the process of planning, I lost a friend to suicide, so it solidified my reasoning for doing it.”
Cam has already taken on some big events previously, including a segment of a charity relay from John O’Groats to Lands End, and completing a 50km race along Loch Ness.
He is going to be supported by his girlfriend Niamh McSween on the challenge, and he will also be joined by a co-worker on days two and three, his brother and his running coach.
They will be staying at a mix of campsites, hotels and family’s homes during the course of the run.
Niamh said: “Cam has always been very sporty and done a huge mix of things over the years, between kickboxing, running, football and weightlifting.
“Over the last two years he’s come back to running more.
“We are trying to raise £5000 for Mikeysline and are currently nearly halfway to our target, which is encouraging.
“Mikeysline supports so many people along the NC500 so it seems fitting that this is the challenge Cam is taking on.”
