A lorry driver who shouted abuse at another motorist after being taken to task for cutting in front of a car was described as "arrogant, obnoxious and a bully" by a sheriff.

Kirk Redmond, of Allandale Cottages, Allandale near Falkirk, had been driving his HGV in Longman Road, Inverness on January 23 and was stopped at traffic lights.

Fiscal depute Karen Poke told Inverness Sheriff Court: "When the lights changed to green, the accused cut into the inside lane where there was another car which had to take evasive action to avoid a collision. There was none.

"He did not stop but he was followed and challenged by a van driver when they both stopped briefly at a roundabout. The accused was abusive towards him and was shouting and swearing. The matter was reported to police."

Redmond (51) admitted driving carelessly and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald heard that Redmond was unaware of what had occurred beforehand and he would not be driving HGVs in the future due to health issues.

Sheriff Macdonald fined him £580 and endorsed his licence with eight penalty points.

She told him: "You behaved appallingly to someone who called you up for your actions. You were arrogant and obnoxious, bullying behaviour which we all too often see from lorry drivers who think because they have a bigger vehicle they can do what they like."
