Fortrose Army Cadet Force detachment ‘outstanding’ volunteer hailed for 19 years’ service
A volunteer from the Black Isle has been recognised by the Lord Lieutenant for her almost 20 years of youth work.
Staff Sergeant Instructor Flora Thomson (62), from 1st Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadet Force’s Fortrose Detachment, was presented with a Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service.
Flora joined the Army Cadets in September 2004 as an instructor with Fortrose Detachment and took over the role as its commander in 2013.

Coming into the organisation with no prior experience of the cadets or the military she quickly brought up to the knowledge and the tools to enable her to deliver teaching at the detachment.
Throughout her almost two decades as a volunteer Flora has shown an outstanding commitment in delivering the Cadet
Experience to all of her cadets and care to cadets and adults who meet her. Her passion for the wellbeing of our cadets has helped many a cadet over the years who has experienced homesickness at weekends or Annual Camp.
The presentation of SSI Thomson’s certificate took place at the Cadet Hall in Fortrose in front of her cadets and fellow volunteers and was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Ross & Cromarty, Ms Joanie Whiteford.
Also in attendance was Captain Debra Ennis, Inverness Company Commander and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Ross & Cromarty Angus Watson MBE.
After the presentation Flora said: “Lost for words. I am very humbled to receive the award for 19 years’ service to the Army Cadet Force, soon to be 20.”
The Army Cadets promise young people from all walks of life access to fun, friendship, action and adventure. It aims to challenge young people “to learn more, do more and try more” and to aim high and go further in life, no matter what they aim to do.
There are over 72,000 cadets and 10,000 adults in more than 1600 locations around the UK involved in the Army Cadets.
Fortrose Detachment meet every Monday evening at the Cadet Hall on Rose Street between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
