THE chance to meet an artist inspired by her surroundings is being offered by a Wester Ross museum.

Gairloch museum is staging the Meet the Artist event with Catherine Sargeant.

She will share details of the process of creating her artwork.

Gairloch Museum’s autumn exhibition features the work of the visual artist who is based in Edinburgh but regularly stays in Gairloch. Her exhibition showcases paintings, and altered books, developed during the time she spends at Badantional, Gairloch, where she observes the horizon, documenting the changing sky and sea over different days, months and seasons.

Catherine creates her altered books, by painting and collaging over old books to document the differences in the landscape, words are left revealed to create erasure poetry. These altered books are the inspiration for Catherines final finished paintings in various materials; oil, acrylic, ink, resin and pigments. The edited words are then connected within the paintings or in their titles, creating images that hope to simultaneously calm and question the viewer.

The event is on Friday September 23, and will also feature a live performance from singer songwriter Tom Houston, who like Catherine takes inspiration for his work from the local area.

The event will run from 7pm to 8.30pm, and tickets are £3 from the Gairloch Museum website.
