Fierce fight for Highland selection

THE fight for a jersey at Highland Rugby Club has rarely been fiercer, according to head coach Dave Carson.

But cut-throat competition for places is doing nothing to diminish team spirit within the title-chasing Canal Park camp.

Carson’s assessment comes ahead of the start of the second half of a National Two campaign already promising much for last season’s National Three champions.

Second-place Highland travel to face Preston Lodge tomorrow (Saturday) four points behind division leaders Biggar and a full 11 above the fourth-top host club.

Injuries and other absences have done little to dilute the northerly club’s highly-encouraging form in the first half of the season, with a strength-in-depth ensuring some late-night selection headaches for Carson and fellow coaches.
