Nominate your local hero now!

PEOPLE of Moray are being asked to nominate a local hero to take part in the historic riding procession to the Scottish Parliament this summer.

The successful candidate will be chosen by newly elected MSP Richard Lochhead.

They will take part in the procession along the Royal Mile on Friday, July 1 with MSPs, schoolchildren, religious leaders and prominent Scots.

The fourth session of the Scottish Parliament will be marked by HM the Queen addressing newly elected members of the parliament.

In the afternoon, Holyrood will open its doors to guests and members of the public for an open day which will include free tours and musical performances showcasing young Scottish talent.

All MSPs are inviting a ‘local hero’ who has made an important contribution to the lives of others, ensuring that the event reflects Scotland’s achievements and aspirations.

At the opening of the previous parliamentary session in 2007, Barbara Vesco was nominated for her long-time voluntary work as a charity shop manager in Forres and her wider involvement in the community.

Mr Lochhead said: “I would ask my constituents to send me nominations for the person they feel best deserves to represent Moray as our local hero.

“It will be an exciting day for everybody involved in the procession and the ceremony, and I am very much looking forward to it.

“It is a great opportunity for someone who has worked tirelessly on behalf of others in the community to get the recognition they deserve. I look forward to receiving these nominations.

He added: “These are historic times for Scotland and the Scottish Parliament, and I have no doubt they will be unforgettable for the local heroes involved.”

Nominations should be sent to Richard Lochhead MSP, 9 Wards Road, Elgin IV30 1NL (e-mail: richard.lochhead.msp@scottish.parliament.uk) by Tuesday, May 31.
