PUPILS in Thurso got a hands-on insight into the electoral system when they staged a mock election on Wednesday.

The P7 class at Mount Pleasant chose six candidates, one each from the SNP, Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Greens plus an independent, then researched policies for each party, developed manifestos, made posters and leaflets, produced party political broadcasts and then finally gave speeches to the whole school.

Every pupil in the school then voted.

Labour won with a clear majority and candidate Chelsey Trueman’s acceptance speech was received with a round of applause.

Class teacher Christine Firth said: “The children learnt a lot about the electoral process and were delighted with the response they received from the rest of the school.”
