Caley Thistle to face Celts or Gers in cup

By Caley Thistle

CELTIC or Rangers will face Caley Thistle in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup after crackers in Inverness and Glasgow at the weekend.

ICT stormed to a 5-1 win against First Division visitors Morton, with goals from new signing Chris Hogg and doubles from Adam Rooney and Richie Foran.

Other January captures Aaron Doran and Alex MacDonald also featured, with the former looking superb in his role from the start.

Keeper Ryan Esson was rested, with Northern Ireland's Jonny Tuffey coming back in goals and he saved an early chance from Allan Jenkins.

However, the Highlanders took the lead on 19 minutes when skipper Foran fired Terry Butcher's team ahead after being teed up by Lee Cox.

ICT were getting stronger by the minute and impressive Doran saw his corner nodded over the top by Foran.

Seven minutes before the break, Rooney doubled the scoreline after fine link-up play from Eric Odhiambo and Foran.

Early in the second half, Peter Weatherson made an impact and his dangerous cross was just missed as the Greenock team probed for a way back.

Carlo Monti then tested Tuffey, who was equal to the chance.

The tie was put out of reach on 62 minutes though when substitute Dani Sanchez, who soon went off with an injured hand, whipped in a cross and Hogg finished with a powerful header.

The fourth goal came soon after when Russell Duncan played the ball to Doran and he picked out Rooney for a stopping header.

David Proctor, who replaced Sanchez, picked out Rooney for what should have been his hat-trick strike, but somehow missed from three yards out.

Derek Lyle then gave the Ton fans something to cheer about when he got the better of Hogg and finished well.

The final goal came with four minutes remaining when Foran scored after an excellent pass from Cox.

On Sunday, Rangers and Celtic drew 2-2 at Ibrox in a sizzling tie and now the rivals will replay at Parkhead for the right to face Inverness CT.
