Campbell double fires Nairn into semis
NAIRN County hitman Craig Campbell hit a late double to seal a 2-1 Fosters Cup quarter-final win at Huntly – but also missed a penalty for his hat-trick.
Yet, the afternoon got off to a horror start for Nairn when goalkeeper Callum Donaldson’s sliced clearance with collected by Michael McGinlay and he rounded Donaldson for a simple finish.
The Black and Golds were dealt a blow, however, on 56 minutes when Ross Campbell was sent off for a challenge on Craig Campbell.
This boosted Nairn who levelled when Campbell headed into the net from a Tony Low cross.
With just three minutes to go, Campbell got the winner when he cut in from the right side and finished with a cracking low shot.
In the final minute, Dale Gillespie won a penalty when he was infringed in the box by Paul Young, but Campbell’s spot-kick flew wide of the post.
Nairn’s opponents in the semis will be Rothes, who scored result of the weekend in the North with a stunning 4-3 quarter-final win against Keith.
The other semi-final will be between Cove Rangers and Fraserburgh.
Cove hit nine without reply in their quarter-final against Strathspey Thistle, who arrived in the north-east with just 11 players due to the flu bug sweeping through the club.
The Broch booked their semi date thanks to a 5-3 victory at Turriff United.
In the Highland League, a broken down team bus was not the ideal preparation for Clach’s long trip to Wick Academy.
However, they twice hit back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw.
The hosts got off to a flying start after 20 minutes when Richard Macadie burst clear and crashed home a fine goal.
A powerful header from Stuart Leslie on 35 minutes levelled the match as the ex-Caley Thistle youngster connected with a cross from Sam Urquhart.
However, Wick were ahead again moments later through David Allan to give them a 2-1 interval lead.
Clach grabbed their share of the spoils though on 52 minutes when Leslie bagged his second of the game.
Elsewhere in the league, Inverurie Locos crushed visitors Lossiemouth 6-1, while Deveronvale were 2-1 winners at Brora Rangers.
Leaders Buckie Thistle’s home fixture with Fort William was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
