Cyclists urged to join ride for CLIC Sargent
CYCLISTS from all over the north are being invited to take part in one of the most scenic events in Scotland next month in aid of a national cancer charity.
The 4th Euan Macrae Bike Challenge takes place on Saturday, September 10 in Aldie Burn Woods, Tain in aid of CLIC Sargent. The event was introduced as a memorial to the Tain teenager who died in 2007.
Peter Logie, CLIC Sargent’s Community Fundraiser said: "This is more than just a bike ride event. It is designed for all types of cyclists. Athough principally targeted at families, there were some serious mountain bikers last year who thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. We are hoping to attract an even bigger field this year."
Euan’s six-year-old cousin Ben, from Inverness, who has been through cancer treatment, is taking part this year along with Euan’s brother, father and other cousin Kyle Gordon. Also taking part is Amanda Macdonald, from Golspie, who is a cousin of Euan’s mum Karen. She has recently set up a fundraising group in Sutherland to raise the profile of the charity.
Peter added: "The woods are a bit of a hidden secret to those outwith the area and the views across the Dornoch Firth are spectacular. Our 3k course will have many Winnie the Poo themed aspects with a Tigger bouncing area.
"We are also extending the challenge to uni-cyclists, one of whom is rumoured to practice with a boa constrictor around her neck! We also hope to have at least one penny farthing trying out the course."
A local support group for the charity organise the event with the generous support of the Forestry Commision who provide a very tasty barbeque and lots of vehicles and marshals on the day.
Although it isn’t compulsory to be sponsored for the event, participants are asked to try and raise at least £50.
Entry is £25 per family, £10 for an adult, £5 for six to17-year-olds, whilst under-fives are free. The entrance fee guarantees you to a burger and a drink at the end. There will also be refreshment stops around the course. Cyclists can tackle either the 20k route or the specially themed 3k course, which can be walked or cycled.
