There is a will but is there a way?
Is there the will?
THERE is a will, but is there a way? That’s the question emerging from the wealth of reader reaction over the former Elgin Library at Grant Lodge.
Our letters section highlights the deep feeling that exists for this historic building, built to plans, we are told, by Scotland’s greatest architect, Robert Adam.
It stands in the outstanding setting of Elgin’s Cooper Park, but while it should shine out as a beacon to the town’s past, present and future, it is boarded up, an embarrassing, dilapidated eyesore.
Sitting in the shadow of Elgin’s iconic Cathedral, treasured by Historic Scotland and by the local community, it tells a sorry tale.
It has long been the centre of controversy. Should it be retained, demolished, sold, restored? Views have poured forth, but nothing has happened.
Here we are again, seeing it as a major talking point, and that alone is a good sign. We see that people care, that it still matters, and it is vital that this interest is put to use.
It’s time for action, not just talk. Those who speak out on its place in Elgin’s rich and proud history, about its place in the town’s present and future, need to step forward and try to breathe new life into the building.
Is there a genuine chance of seeing the Lodge restored to life, in whatever form that may be? Moray Council would surely work with any community group prepared to look into doing so.
It has been tried before and failed, we are told, but if the community feels so strongly about the building, that should be no excuse for not making another attempt to form an investigative group.
Readers tell us it is Elgin’s shame. We need to see that negative turned into a positive, with people coming together to fight to save this icon.
Are we up for the challenge? Step forward those who are.
WHILE Grant Lodge dominates our letters columns here, the new-look ‘Scot’ website has this week provided the platform for a debate on RAF Lossiemouth’s proposal to close a childcare centre in Elgin.
Mums and others have rushed on-line, largely to oppose the closure of a valued, respected and much needed centre. Mums, and dads of children enrolled there are in fighting mood, undaunted by the might of the RAF.
The ‘Scot’ is proud to provide this platform for readers to air their views, in print or on-line. We can give you a voice, so use this great opportunity for whichever issue you feel strongly about.
Let’s be hearing from you!
