TRIBUTE has been paid to Denis Miller who guided Elgin City as it took its first steps into the Scottish Football League.

Mr Miller (81) died this week following a short illness.

He was at the helm of the Borough Briggs club after it was admitted to the SFL in 2000.

Club spokesman Martyn Hunter said: "It is with sadness that the board of Elgin City Football Club learned of the death of former chairman, Mr Denis Miller.

"When Elgin City FC was admitted into the Scottish Third Division in 2000, the board at that time needed a chairman who had the experience in business and had the stature in football matters to guide the club in the challenges ahead.

"Denis Miller fulfilled that role and served the club admirably as chairman from 2001 until 2005.

"The board of Elgin City Football Club sends its condolences to the Miller family at this sad time."

Mr Miller, who was a stockbroker in Aberdeen, was a director of Aberdeen Football Club from 1989 to 1999 and was latterly vice-chairman of the Dons.

He was also a keen golfer and rose to become president of the Scottish Golf Union in 1987.

Survived by his two sons, Innes and Peter, and four grandchildren, Mr Miller’s funeral takes place on Tuesday in Aberdeen.
