Police blitz on summertime booze drivers in Highlands
DRIVERS are being warned not to become another drink drive statistic as police launch their Safer Summer campaign today.
For the next fortnight, until June 20, there will be increased police patrols on roads across the Highlands and officers will be targeting those who get behind the wheel after boozing despite continued warnings of "don’t risk it".
Between April 2002 and May 2011 - drink driving was responsible for 40 deaths on roads in this area.
The force’s road safety officer, Laura Fisher, said: "Drink driving is something which is socially unacceptable and people are not prepared to put up with it. We are seeing more drink drivers being reported by members of the public and on occasion by family members, which highlights the public’s concern on this crime."
She added: "Our officers will be out in force over the coming weeks to target motorists who drink or take drugs before driving. People who drink and drive may be kept in custody until their court appearance and if this happens at a weekend they could find themselves spending Saturday and Sunday behind bars."
The Vehicle Forfeiture Scheme will continue to operate and those caught drink driving with a previous conviction could lose their licence, their vehicle and face the prospect of having to re-sit their test.
As the summer season approaches people are more likely to be out and about, whether that be at festivals, concerts, shows, family events and police will be focusing their attention on those who take the risk by drinking and driving at any of these events.
Buses and taxis are widely available so there is no excuse for drink driving, according to police, and if you are at an event where transport is not available then officers ask that you nominate a designated driver who has not been drinking.
If you suspect someone may be about to drink or take drugs before driving contact 0845 600 5703 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
