A BRAVE woman from Dingwall took a short cut to providing a welcome boost for a charity close to her heart –by having her hair cropped on her 65th birthday.

Margaret McIntosh, a well-known customer assistant at Tesco’s Dingwall store, admitted before getting the chop that her thick head of hair was her pride and joy.

But she decided to take on the challenge to raise funds for the National Autistic Society to make her milestone birthday all the more meaningful.

She said: “I was an autism practitioner for 16 years and I totally get it’s really hard for families, especially at this very not normal time. Routines and social activities for any autistic person are so important for everyday life, old or young.”

After flagging up her plans, she quickly found herself committed to it by her niece, who offered to do the cut.

It took all of five minutes to crop her hair and to date £350 has been pledged.

It was certainly a birthday Margaret, better known as Mags to her friends, is unlikely to forget. She said: “Everyone has been so positive about it, saying how much it suits me, but the overall consensus has been that I did a good thing for a really good cause. I have asked the National Autistic Society for the funds to be used in the Highlands. I’d love it to be used to help a family get a wee break but can’t stipulate that unfortunately.

She added: “I did get a couple of wigs but hated how it felt so don’t wear one. It will be fine. My hair will grow back eventually.”

The new look soon changed as she dyed her “very short hair”, adding: “I do not do grey hair even at 65!”

Donations can still be made via her Facebook page.

She said: “I’d be ever so grateful for any donation of anything you can afford. It is really appreciated and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Her fundraiser can be found via https://www.facebook.com/margaret.mcintosh.313 where pledges can be made.
