Invergordon community councillor Gordon Ramsay first spotted the sunken area in the morning while walking his dog, before reporting the sinkhole to Cromarty Firth councillor Pauline Munro later that afternoon.

Mr Ramsay said: “I was walking my dog at about 7.30am on Saturday morning when I first noticed the sunken area on the path. It wasn’t until around 1pm later on when I was driving past in my car and I noticed that the hole had appeared. I think that the morning tide must have been enough for it to finally fall through.

“The council arrived in the early evening to put plastic fencing around it, but it was an open area for around six hours. I had to stop one guy on his bike and another person walking past to make them aware of the hole. The town had a visit from the Regal Princess cruise ship that day too so a lot more people walking about.”

Highland Council has been contacted for comment.
