Ross fundraiser tackles Everest - in the kilt
A STALWART Highland Hospice fundraiser from Ross-shire is undertaking his tallest challenge yet – trekking to Everest base camp in his kilt.
John Urquhart (65), from Ullapool, is tackling his high altitude adventure in Nepal along with Alex Mackenzie from Cawdor, Mark Bain of Nairn and Susan Drew from Kirkhill.
John and his companions set out on November 8 for the trek from Lukla through remote valleys and forests to an altitude of 18,370 feet to reach Everest Base Camp.
The 13-day expedition will be physically arduous, but John is determined - frostbite forbidding to complete the whole challenge in his kilt. He and Alex hope to raise £8,000 between them.
John, whose day job is a driver with DR MacLeod hauliers, has also been a volunteer van driver and a dedicated supporter for the Hospice since his wife Rene passed away in 2009.
Since then he has undertaken many challenges to raise money for the Hospice, including canoeing the Zambezi and walking backwards over the infamous Bealach na Bà in Wester Ross.
Highland Hospice fundraiser Amanda Burt said: "We are so grateful to John for all his support of raising awareness of Highland Hospice and for his devotion to raising money to care for our patients."
