Cromarty Firth Highland Council ward by-election details revealed following shock resignation of Maxine Smith
DETAILS of an Easter Ross election that will fill the seat vacated by a resigning local councillor have been revealed.
Maxine Smith’s announcement last month that she had resigned from the Cromarty Firth ward role came as a surprise to many and followed what she described as “serious hate incidents” and social media trolling as amongst her reasons.
The timetable for the election of a councillor to represent Ward 6 Cromarty Firth – and one for Ward 10 Eilean a' Cheò – has been confirmed.
The by-elections are being held following the resignations of former Councillors Maxine Smith and Calum Munro.
The Notice of Election and timetable for these elections will be published online on Tuesday, May 6 at www.highland.gov.uk/byelection.
Prospective candidates will have until 4pm on Friday, May 16 to submit their completed nomination forms.
The last time there was an election for the Cromarty Firth ward, no fewer than 12 candidates stepped forward.
The ward is currently represented by Tamala Collier (SNP), John Edmondson (Scottish Liberal Democrats) and Sinclair Coghill.
If the seats are contested, the polls will take place on Thursday, June 19 with an electronic count taking place on Friday, June 20.
Anyone over 16 years old who is living in Wards 6 or 10 is eligible to vote in these by-elections if they are registered.
To register to vote visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Alternatively, call the Electoral Registration Office on 0800 393783 to request a paper application form.
