A family birthday party turned nasty when a 74-year-old man called his ex-wife of around 30 years, Evelyn, an "evil Lyn".

Now Ian MacDonald, of Great North Road, Muir of Ord, has been banned from contacting his former spouse for the next 18 months after Sheriff Sara Matheson imposed a non-harassment order (NHO).

MacDonald appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at a house in Culbokie on May 4 this year.

Fiscal depute David Morton told the court: "The pair were previously married but have been divorced for over 30 years. They occasionally see each other at family events and this was a birthday party for one of their sons.

"All were consuming alcohol and Mrs MacDonald was speaking to someone else when her ex husband approached and there was some discussion before it deteriorated.

"He referred to her as evil and called her Evil Lyn. He had an envelope in his hand and he was brandishing it which caused her a paper cut.

"They were ushered into separate rooms to allow the party to continue. She is supportive of an NHO."

Defending, John MacColl said: "Mr MacDonald had not been drinking. There was a discussion about their past relationship and he made a comment which was a play on her name, Evelyn.

"He flicked the envelope and did not realise it had caught her."

Sheriff Matheson fined MacDonald £290.
