A GIFTED singer from Conon Bridge impressed adjudicators at the biggest celebration of Gaelic language and culture this week.

Sophie Stewart (14), a third year pupil at Dingwall Academy, was entered into her first National Mod at the age of six after impressing in a children’s choir she started with at the age of five.

At the Royal National Mod in Oban this week, she took a second place in the Solo Singing Under 19 own choice section, up against many competitors several years older than her.

She was pipped by winner Caitlyn Yuill from Falkirk.

She will also return to Ross-shire with a bronze accolade in the solo singing for fluent girls aged 13-15.

Proud grandmother Margaret Morrison, who lives in Maryburgh, thanked everyone who has supported Sophie along the way, amongst them Gaelic tutor Steven Maciver.

She was also full of praise for the courtesy and kindness shown by the people of Oban to visitors to this year’s event.

She said: “It was been great, there has been a very good atmosphere.”

Sophie is no stranger to success at the Mod having scooped a 1st place medal for singing last year in Paisley.
