Aspiring actors across the Highlands are being invited to audition for roles in two forthcoming short films at Eden Court.

The casting call has come from participants of Just Film, a film-making class for adults, with two new projects set to offer budding performers an “excellent opportunity to develop [their] screen acting skills”.

Engagement producer Drew Tremlett says it is the first time in almost 10 years that Eden Court have been able to offer the call to “more mature” actors.

“We have a really nice mix of participants so far. Some retirees, some young people,” he explains.

“Some people are looking to learn more about filmmaking, and from that cohort we have selected the two scripts on the casting call.

“Old High – the first film – is a spooky family drama based around the Old High Church in Inverness. We then have a second project which is an LGBTQ-themed drama about school classmates preparing for their school prom.”

Described as a “partly supernatural” drama, Old High tackles themes such as facing up to and coming to terms with grief and loss.

Having secured permission to film on location at the historic Old High Church church, writer-director Andy Bruce is now seeking two early-middle aged female actors, aged 35-40 to fill acting roles.

The kirkyard at the historic site has often been a favourite with paranormal investigators as the location of many “happy and tragic” moments over the years.

Written by Frances Sinclair, a teaching assistant at Culloden Academy, school drama “Best Dressed” is described as a “coming-of-age” piece about young people trying to find their place in the world, struggling with gender roles.

The makers of the drama are seeking three young men aged between 16 and 19 years old, and two females aged between 16 and 19 to fill a total of five roles in the piece, which follows a young man who wants to wear a dress to his school prom.

Mr Tremlett says the response to previous casting calls has always been positive, and he invites anyone who is looking to advance their performance career to get in touch.

“We have sent out casting calls like this before and we always get a really positive response,” he said.

“Some of them are professional actors, some semi-professional, and many are just embarking on a performance career.

“We also get emails from people looking to try something different as a career, and we always try to be as accommodating as possible.

“It’s a chance for them to build a show reel, get a professional credit on their career and open up new avenues as we tend to culminate in a public screening.

“It can create opportunities for feedback, and a chance to network with like-minded people.”

Filming for both productions is set to begin this month, and applications are being invited via email at eden-court.co.uk/about/information-for-artists-and-companies/freelance-opportunities.
