Strictly no excuses over Evanton modern jive dance class - even if you do have two left feet!
DO you want to dance?
Absolute beginners with two left feet inspired by what they see on Strictly are being given an opportunity to start their own dance journeys…in Easter Ross.
Teacher Steve Hicks is tonight launching a new series of weekly modern jive classes at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Evanton - with no requirement for having a partner and touted as “ideal for folk with two left feet”.
Steve reckons that the hardest step is the first one that takes you into a dance class in the first place but insists the rewards are sweet.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s first session for absolute beginners, he said: “Modern jive, much less energetic than the ballroom jive seen on Strictly, has now become an international fun style of dance to learn.
“After just a few weeks your confidence grows and you’ll soon realise that what you thought were two left feet have been transformed into dancing feet - all without having to know your lefts from right. For absolute beginners the first class is free so all you need to do is to just take that first step.”
With additional Wednesday evening classes for beginners and improvers, he explained: “I'm now semi-retired but love teaching dance.
“I used to teach salsa, waltz, country two step and run classes throughout the year but now only teach in the autumn and winter months through till the end of March, so the timing of Strictly is purely coincidental but I'm sure it helps - I think I've also seen posters up at pharmacists recently promoting learning to dance to help prevent the onset of dementia.”
Asked if anyone is beyond the pale when it comes to learning, he said: “The classes really are for anyone - it's such a joy to see someone make that very brave step of coming into their first ever dance class feeling that they really do have two left feet only to leave an hour later with a real sense of achievement and a much lighter step.”
