A890 Stromeferry bypass to fully reopen to traffic 10 days early, Highland Council announces
DISRUPTIVE roadworks on the Stromeferry bypass are set to end early on Thursday – 10 days earlier than originally planned.
The A890 will fully reopen to traffic at 7am on October 24.
It has been subject to weeks of night-time closures while further rock scaling and netting works took place on the notoriously unstable cliff face above the road.
The contractor, Geo-Rope Ltd, has been busy on site since the start of September and the council said that every effort had been made to keep disruption for all road users to a minimum,
Traffic management has been in place since September 9, with daytime convoys through the site, as well as overnight road closures and one weekend closure.
The works, which included inspection and maintenance of existing rock protection measures, were scheduled to last eight weeks and were due to be completed on November 3.
Chairman of the council’s planning, development and infrastructure Committee, Cllr Allan Henderson said: “Its great news that these essential works will be finishing ahead of schedule and the road can fully open from Thursday morning onwards.
“I would like to thank the council’s team and the contractors for their hard work keeping disruption to a minimum.
"Doing work on such a busy key route is never easy and a lot of planning went into this phase so I would also like to thank the local communities for their important input when we were scheduling the works and for their patience.”
Ward councillor Biz Campbell echoed his thanks. She said: “The council staff and contractors have done everything they can to keep traffic moving and I think it’s terrific news that the works will be completed early.
"The community consultation sessions held earlier in the year were very helpful so I would like to particularly thank everyone who took part.”
