FAMILIES in Tain showed they had the X factor when they took on a challenge focusing on feeling good and being healthy at any weight.

The families taking part in the NHS Highland X-Programme, a healthy lifestyle scheme, celebrated their achievements last week — and paved the way for others with an interest to take part themselves.

The programme aims to build confidence around healthy eating and fun physical activity, with participating families getting advice on smart shopping tips, setting goals and smooth family communication.

Crucially, each family’s healthy living plan is based around their own circumstances and what fits in best with their daily lives.

There are eight main sessions once a week — and, three months later, they are invited to attend a catch-up party to celebrate their achievements, to see how people are getting on and to be given more support if required.

Sixteen families completed the programme in Tain. Both groups attended catch-up parties at Tain Royal Academy Community Centre. These took the form of an afternoon of fun and games and a healthy hot meal.

Eleanor Grant (pictured) from NHS Highland, who is co-ordinating the X-programmes in the area, said, “The aim of the X-Programme is to help families feel good and have fun, whilst doing things that will make a real difference to their long-term health and energy. The Tain families have all done really well. It’s good to see them so much more confident about making healthy choices. We’ve had lots of fun and they’ve achieved so much.”

Ms Grant said, “We are keen to hear from families who would like to get involved in these programmes and any ideas they may have about the kind of activities in which they would like to take part.”
