THE moving date for Tain’s new post office location has been confirmed.

At the end of May, Post Office confirmed that it’s Tain branch would be moving to the Phone Store on 27 Lamington Street after previously operating in the Tain Bothy shop with a temporary postmaster.

The current branch will be closing on July 29 at 5pm, with the new branch officially opening on July 30 at 1pm.

The move to Tain Phone Store prompted a strong backlash from a number of concerned locals questioning whether the new location is appropriate.

Last week we reported the Phone Store’s response to the “continuous negative” backlash, where they made a statement to “put the record straight”.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Tain Post Office has been operated on our behalf by a temporary postmaster.

“Whilst this arrangement enabled us to maintain access to Post Office services to our customers in the area, we have been looking for a permanent solution to safeguard service in the long run.

“The new premises are undergoing a refurbishment to incorporate Tain Post Office. The new operator firmly believes that the move would help to secure continued access to Post Office services locally, as well as supporting the viability of their business.”

There will be a designated Post Office serving point at the new phone repair counter, opposite the current retail service area. There will be 54 hours of Post Office service a week.

The spokesperson continued: “We remain confident that the layout and location of the new branch will continue to meet customer needs and deliver an excellent service, whilst securing the long-term viability of Post Office services in the local community.

“Following public consultation feedback re the sale of Vape products, the new postmaster has agreed to remove advertising of vapes externally from the Post Office side of the premises, once the Post Office has been added. He also intends to expand his retail offering to compliment the Post Office with stationery and a range of products that can be personalised.”
