Ross-shire woman Annie Wilson was married with three children by the age of 21 and a desire to do something for herself in her 30s led to her studying BSc (Hons) Psychology at UHI Inverness.

After six years of study, not only did she achieve a first-class degree, but also won the British Psychological Society Undergraduate Prize for academic achievement.

Annie said: “To finish so strongly with such a sense of achievement in something I had done completely for myself was extremely rewarding.”

Annie (41), from Contin, began studying psychology through Open University and switched to UHI Inverness when she discovered it offered psychology online.

She now works as an assistant practitioner in mental health services and is on secondment with Public Health as a health improvement advisor.

She is also in the early stages of applying for a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

Annie said: “I felt part-time studying was perfect, it allowed me to feel connected to a local learning community whilst still being able to learn remotely.

“I quickly discovered while doing the course that aspiring to work in clinical psychology was something I wanted to pursue. This led to me starting work in NHS mental health services full-time which again meant the flexibility of learning with UHI Inverness was so important as studies now had to be done in the evenings and weekends.

“I loved the breadth of psychology, there are so many different aspects to it, and it really is the basis of everything it is to be human. The tutors were always very responsive to any emails or questions and very approachable. A couple of years ago I was going through a very difficult time in my personal life, and I really appreciated the support I was given by my Personal Academic Tutor.”
