THE number of vehicles travelling on the Kessock Bridge has dropped by a third during the ongoing emergency repairs.

Initial figures show the traffic volume has been slashed by 3,000 vehicles per hour at peak times, to just 2,000.

Scotland Transerve revealed the new statistics as work to repair an expansion joint remains on schedule to be completed on Sunday.

A spokesman said, "As we head into the last week day, Scotland Transerv would like to thank everyone for their continued patience and efforts to find alternative travel or work arrangements - with initial traffic figures showing a drop of a third in vehicles travelling over the bridge, from an average of 3,000 per hour during the peak, to 2,000."

Transerve is taking full advantage of the partial closure to progress with surfacing repairs and installation of new ice sensors on the bridge.

The authority is also taking the opportunity to clear the central reservation and support the Highland Council with its cleaning of the footways, cycle paths and carriageway during the works.

This follows a complaint by Ross-shire firefighter Alec Mann who claimed he has suffered four punctures on his bike this year due to the state of the cycle paths on the bridge.
