WATCH: World Tattie Scone Championship winner named at Taste of Nairn food festival
A chef was named the winner of the World Tattie Scone Championships in Nairn yesterday.
With 18 people of all ages entering the competition, it was Elgin chef Gary Grant who scooped the prize at the competition held at the food festival Taste of Nairn.
For his creative take on the classic Scottish staple, titled Speyside Surprise, he used sweet potato mixed with gram flour for the scones and topped it with salmon and cream cheese, delighting the panel of judges.
Mr Grant said he was pleasantly surprised of the win.
"I am flabbergasted," he said. "I am over the moon, didn't expect it at all.
"My passion for food is so that everyone can share and enjoy and learn," added the chef, who also runs courses in the area.
The second prize went to Norma Breathet with her Coronation Chicken tattie scones, and third prize was scooped by Adam Rhind with his creative Teenage Dirtbag interpretation of the classic recipe.
It was a hard job for the judges on the panel.
Judge Adam Bell said: "It was a very intense competition, excellent entries made our job difficult.
"All over the competition there was lots of creativity, inventiveness and great flavours.
On the winner recipe, he added: "It was a controversial decision to use the sweet potatoes in tattie scones – it stood out."
