Black Isle village of Culbokie marks a milestone as public toilets fall into spotlight
THE opening of a public toilet may not sound like much of a draw.
But it marked a major milestone - and attracted a healthy crowd of people - on the Black Isle last week.
Culbokie Community Trust welcomed around 30 people to a viewing and photo shoot at the new toilets and potting shed on Culbokie Green.

Director Penny Edwards explained: “Everyone was able to have a good look round, see the plans for the multi-purpose building and cafe, have a sociable cuppa as well as share thoughts and ask questions.
“As well as local residents and members of the Green Team - who work so hard every Thursday afternoon to look after Culbokie Green - we were also delighted to welcome Councillors Lyndsey Johnston and Morven-May MacCallum, James Turner from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Bruce Morrison from Ferintosh Community Council and Angus Watson, Deputy Lord Lieutenant.
“We thank all our supporters and funders for helping to deliver this project.
“We hope to open the facility to the general public later this month.”
Culbokie Green is part of a bigger project to build a new village centre including a café, some business space with private treatment rooms, public toilets and a tool store for use by volunteers managing the Green.
The project was started in 2014 when 81 per cent of locals supported a community right to buy in a postal ballot.
Since purchasing the land, not only has Culbokie Green been created as a biodiverse resource with paths and play areas for the enjoyment of the whole community but six new affordable rental homes have been completed and occupied.
The project has already transformed the village centre. The Green has become a vibrant place for the enjoyment of children and adults and many people are benefiting from the facilities that have been created.
