His decision to resign from the role was made on Monday night after completing their North Caledonian League season last month as they are currently in seventh place.

Mitchell initially joined as assistant manager at Alness United during the 2022-23 season before becoming boss and leading the team for the past two seasons.

It included a run to the Football Times Cup Final this season when they lost 3-1 to Inverness Athletic in December.

Alness United confirmed his departure on Monday night with chairman Tommy Regan thanking Mitchell for his services during his time in charge.

He said: “I would like to personally thank Robert for his efforts with the first team over the last few years and wish him all the best in the future.”

Meanwhile, Invergordon will take on Golspie Sutherland in the North Caledonian Cup final after both winning the respective semi final clashes on Saturday.

League champions Invergordon are on for a league and cup double after defeating Halkirk United 3-0 at the Recreation Grounds.

The North Caledonian League’s top scorer Calum Brown gave Invergordon the lead with Ken Morrison doubling their advantage in the 57th minute.

Ben Bruce got Invergordon’s third goal to seal their place in the final.

Golspie Sutherland ran riot as they thrashed Inverness Athletic 8-0 at King George V Park.

Robbie Murray gave Golspie the lead with Craig Gunn doubling their advantage. Lewis Harkness scored twice to make it 4-0 with Graham Macnab and James Murray finding the net to make it six. Harkness then completed his hat-trick with Murray grabbing his second to complete the rout.

The North Caledonian League match between Thurso and Bunillidh Thistle was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Three matches are taking place at the North Caledonian League on Saturday. St Duthus take on Invergordon at Grant Park in Tain in their final league games of the season. Bunillidh Thistle take on Inverness Athletic at Couper Park in Helmsdale with Halkirk United set to take on Orkney at Morrison Park.
