Former Ross County striker Ross Stewart called into senior Scotland squad for first time after impressing at Sunderland

Ross Stewart has been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time ahead of their international friendlies later this month.

The 25-year-old signed for current club Sunderland from Ross County, where he had signed in the summer of 2018 after the Staggies had dropped down to the Championship.

After initially having to be patient for his chance, the forward became a regular part of the starting line-up in the second half of the campaign as County bounced straight back up to the Premiership.

There, his progress really began to take off. He scored 11 goals in all competitions to finish as the club's joint-top scorer with Billy Mckay, and at the time teammate Brian Graham tipped him to break into the national team set up.

Stewart was named triple player of the year, and followed that up with another six in the first half of 2020/21 before moving south in the winter transfer window.

His hot streak in front of goal continued at Sunderland, where he has scored 22 goals in England's League One to top the scoring charts and fire the former top flight side into play-off contention.

Now he will link up with Steve Clarke's squad for the first time, and could make his first appearance in a Scotland shirt at any level as they play two friendlies – first against Poland at Hampden on Thursday and then against an opponent to be confirmed next Tuesday.
