Fortrose Academy pupil fights his way to become Scottish boxing champion
A Fortrose Academy pupil became a Scottish champion in boxing last weekend.
Ethan Hoult, 15, was representing Highland Boxing Academy at the Scottish Development Championships, competing in the 50kg A Class for athletes with between zero and three bouts on their record.
Taking part in a straight final, his head coach Liam Foy was delighted to see the teenager win his maiden gold medal on the national stage.
“It was a cracking contest,” Foy explained.
“Ethan started a wee bit slowly in the first round, he was a wee bit flat-footed, but after getting him back to the corner we got him to set up his attacks a little bit better.
“He did well in the second and third rounds to get the split decision. It was close, but we were confident he had done enough.
“It was great for him. He’s a young lad, only 15, and it was his first title for the club – and our first title for the season.
“It was great to give the young lad the opportunity to go down there and get some competition experience, and get the gold medal.”
Hoult was not the only Ross representative in HBA’s squad, with 12-year-old Troy Stewart from Tain also in action.
Stewart was also victorious in his bout, but will have to return this weekend to try and earn his own title.
“Troy Stewart was one of two young lads we had boxing in the same age band at 12 years old, and they both won their bouts,” Foy added.
“It was great to have young talent emerging through in the gym and for both of them to get wins.
“They both had an exhibition before, but last weekend was their competitive debuts. For them both to come away with wins on the first weekend was great.
“They are both scheduled to box in semi finals on Saturday, and then if they win that their finals will be on Sunday.”
